Many of those homes on the island are State owned, and get rented out for $50 or $100 a year - its all in who you know: campaign contributors, cronies, etc. The newspapers jump on it once in a while, but as both parties like being able to offer favors, they don't change a thing. Some are rented State land - 50 to 100 year leases. Those are the best sweetheart deals: you own the home and yet pay no taxes due to the State owned land it sits on!
Can that be my dream house too?
